What do you do when the rest of the world is dieting and you are trying to gain a few pounds? GO GET CANNOLI! And where do you go when you want a delicious cannoli? Villabate Pastry Shop in the Bensonhurst section of Brooklyn, where the shop owners still Parle Italiano, and you can practically feel the Sicilian breeze. This gem on 18th avenue still does things the old fashioned way, by hand and with super fresh ingredients. Whether you want a fantastic napolean or fresh Italian bread, this is the place to go. There isn't anywhere in Manhattan that can touch it. Though it is all takeout only, the lines are often several people deep. For the amount of calories you are about to consume, I would suggest parking somewhere in the lower east side of Manhattan. You are going to want to eat everything.
And their cannoli? I would happily sit through an entire Yanni concert wearing nothing but toe socks and a smile if it meant that I could gobble up one of these delicious confections at the close. These are the things pregnant women beat their husbands up at 7 am for. They are creamy, crunchy, rich, and exploding with flavor. When you first take a bite, you notice the taste of ricotta and marscarpone, blended brilliantly with subtle vanilla and spice. It's texture is incredibly smooth, like the best gelato you have ever had, or a priceless fois gras. It is in itself a phenomenon. The shell is somewhere between delicate cookie and ice cream cone. sturdy yet light, a wonderful contrast to the creamy filling. I want to linger in the aroma of it, I want to bathe in it's richness and kiss it's creator. I think it could solve the Donald vs Rosie saga, just give each side a cannoli and watch the magic. I have many Italian bakeries that I love, but Villabate, has my heart. I Heart Villabate soo much. Go. Eat. Have a dozen cannoli. Or my husband's favorite, the rum horn.
YUM!
